UNIT 4
STAR WARS
a new hope
Pre Production
The Star Wars A New Hope budget was estimated to be around $11 million in which they made around $775 million from the box office, they started the production 4 years earlier than it's release in 1977. The film was written and directed by George Lucas where he made his production company 'Lucasfilm' and produced by Gary Kurtz.
In 1975 George Lucas made his own virtual effects company "Industrial Light & Magic" and during the filming of Star Wars they used 'Motion Control Photography' which created the illusion of size by employing small models and slowly moving cameras.

They filmed scenes on Tatooine in Tunisia in a desert near a city called Nafta. After two weeks of filming in Tunisia they moved to a studio in London and finished the rest of the filming in that studio, they also filmed some in Guatemala but a very short amount of footage.

London To Brighton

-
A Social British Realist film which means that it is a film that makes you feel like it is real and generally has a low budget
-
They used guerrilla film making techniques which is filming in an area which requires permission but do it anyway such as filming in Brighton train station
-
The actors used a technique called 'method acting' which means they try and make themself feel like they're the character they are portraying
-
Budget of £500,000
Shifty
-
Shifty used the Microwave Scheme for funding
-
Shifty had a budget of £100,000 which is generally a low budget compared to other films
-
Produced by Between The Eyes
-
Distributed by Metrodome
-
They advertised the film using 'drug dealer' business cards, used adverts on pirate radio stations and this caught the eye of the public and created lots of controversy for the film and the producers but this gave it a lot of publicity which was good for the film in a business sense
-
Because the budget was funded through the microwave scheme the film only took 18 days to film which is lots quicker than a blockbuster because there is lots more funding towards those films.
Life In A Day
-
The film was crowd sourced which means that the audience created footage and that was used in the film
-
It required lots of logistical thinking because they had to rely on the crowd to film their life in a day and also make sure the cameras were returned safely to the production team
-
There were logistical problems because some cuntries don't have access to new technology like cameras so it was difficult for them to understand how to use a camera
-
They sent two SD cards with cameras, one to keep for memories and one to send back to the production company, they had to trust the people to send back one SD card
Veronica Mars:
-
This film was crowdfunded through Kickstarter.
-
Crowdfunding is when the producers or members of the crew in the film would start a funding page for fans or an audience to donate their money to. The film would then be funded by the crowd because the funding of the film came from their donations on the funding page instead of the distribution company.
-
The distiribution company for Veronica Mars is Warner Bros and the production company is Spondoolie Productions
-
The funding goal was $2 million but instead made nearly $6 million
-
They made $2.2 million from selling on DVD and Blu-Ray
-
The film made $3.2 million in the box office and $163,000 across other countries like Germany and the UK
-
The film broke the record for most backers on a single Kickstarter as it was the fastest project to reach $1 million and fastest to reach $2 million
-
They acheived the $2 million in just under 11 hours
What is Horizontal Integration?
Horizontal integration is when a company has a production of goods they'd use a supply chain to distribute them
Problems in pre- production:
In The Shining the famous scene when Torrance hacks through the door with an axe and yells "Here's Johnny", In pre production they would constantly alter the script and he would say different lines as he hacks through the door, doing this meant that Jack Nicholson (the actor) hacked through 60 different doors just for the line to be slightly altered in these unused takes. This would not be good for the budget as they're lots of money that could've been used on another scene rather than wasting money on doors when they could've just made an agreement on the delivery line from Nicholson.
